The St John’s extension

Anyone who has passed down Forest Glade since last summer will have noticed continual progress on the extension at St. John’s. The new building is due to be completed during March 2011, and details of events to mark the opening will be announced shortly.

The project as a whole will provide:

  • two additional secure and purpose-built childcare spaces for Pre-school and Out-of-School Clubs with kitchen, laundry and toilet facilities.
  • a chapel in the existing building offering spiritual space throughout the week (completed during summer 2011).
  • additional offices and meeting room.
  • more space in the existing building for other church and community activities.

The project has been supported by a substantial Sure Start Grant through Essex County Council, together with grants from Veolia and the All Churches Trust.

Potential chapel designs

Our glass artist Sarah Galloway has prepared possible designs for the new chapel at St John’s. These designs will be on display at St Johns on Sundays 6th and 13th February and are shown below (click ‘read the rest of this entry‘ if you can only see one). Colin will do an informal explanatory presentation using the projector for those who wish it on 6th Feb after church. You are invited to make any comments you wish either verbally or in writing or by e mail ( ) or comment on the website or on the comments sheet on the display board. On 13th February we will hold a consultative meeting open to all after the 11am service at St Johns to discuss the proposals and to test opinion as to the preferred designs. On Sundays 20th and 27th our 11am service will be at St Mary’s (see other notice) and the designs will be available there. A task group will meet on 21st February and we will need to feedback to Sarah by the end of February.

You can contact Colin via the contact page.

St John’s is moving to St Mary’s, 20/27 February

Due to the need to complete works to our existing building during the
February half term our 11am service will be held at ST. MARY’S and not at St John’s on Sundays 20th and 27th February. In all other respects the services will remain as advertised.

Bishop Laurie’s Visit

Bishop’s visit, celebration and Project launch Sunday 18th July

We are delighted that Bishop Laurie Green (Bishop of Bradwell) will be presiding and preaching at St Mary’s and St John’s morning services on Sunday 18th July. We will be taking this opportunity to officially launch the building works for the extension to St John’s. We also hope to celebrate the completion of the lighting project at St Marys. We plan to bury a time capsule during the service at St. Johns and to follow on with tea/coffee & cakes and informal praise and worship led by our music group. We hope you will be able to join us!

Planning permission granted for St John’s extension

Planning permission granted!
Many thanks to all those who wrote to support our application for planning permission for the extension to St. Johns. The Council received 65 letters of support and the Committee passed the permission by 6 votes to one. Our thanks also to Councillor Sandra Hillier who spoke in favour of the proposal at the meeting.

See the building project pages for more information about the project and to see the plans.

St John’s Building Project grant granted

From Colin:

I am delighted to report that (as many of you will already know) we have been voted a grant of over £900,000 from Essex Early Years towards the building of an extension to St John’s. I wish to record our enormous gratitude to all those who worked so hard to make our bid successful, especially to John Purbrick; Gaynor Carter; Tony Dunhill, Claire Bland and our architect John Inkpen. Please continue to pray that we will be guided to use this grant aright in the service of God’s kingdom and our local community, especially as detailed preparation is now undertaken.

Proposed building project

St John’s has applied for funding to build an extension to our premises to provide additional capacity for our preschool and after schools clubs. The proposed extension will provide two additional rooms for these groups.

If the funding application is sucessful the building work will start during the 2010 Summer holidays. While construction work continues on the new building during term time we will continue to provide a full service in the existing building. This will be achieved by securely and safely closing off the area where the building work is taking place and by providing a safe and secure temporary external play area in the car park.

Plans of the proposed extension can be downloaded below. They are pdf documents.
